POEM BELOW

He sits alone in his freshly pressed suit
Note by his side
He’s finally ready
He’s said his goodbyes

Today, he thinks, is better than any other
“After today,” he thinks, “I won’t be a bother”
He holds the cool metal in his hand
As he sits and thinks, “it’s finally the end”

Something outside, though, catches his eye
It’s the neighbor’s kid, like always, yelling, “hi!”
He smiles and floats to the window to see
And, “like always,” he smiles, “he’s calling to me”

As he stands by the window, warm breeze in his hair
And watches the neighbor’s kid play over there
He stops in his tracks.

He becomes more aware.

Birds and songs and sunshine and rain
They’re all there to outlast the pain
Today, he decides, is better than any other
Because “today,” he thinks, “I’m choosing me over other.”
